My husband suggested getting tickets for this concert, and this in itself is A Big Thing, as he does not share my passion for live music!  My photographer friend Dod is rather obsessed with Hayseed Dixie having seen them perform almost 50 times and crediting them with his becoming a gig photographer – they were the first band he snapped.  Needless to say, anticipation for this evening was rather high.

Support for the evening was from Shanghai Treason, they describe themselves as “Yorkshire Flatcap Banjo Punks” and we could see why!  They were energetic and fun, getting the audience warmed up ready for Hayseed Dixie.  After their set, they stayed at the merchandise stand getting selfies and signing things.  Downside of taking hubby to a gig, can’t go and fawn over the musicians!!

The crowd did indeed go wild for Hayseed Dixie, and what a fun gig it was.  They played many and various songs, including Ace of Spades, Highway to Hell, Duelling Banjos, Reaper and of course their very own classic I’m Keeping Your Poop (in a Jar).  Twice Hippy Joe, in his dungarees, escaped the stage and played his way through the audience, much to the delight of his adoring fans!  He’s trying to play the mandolin and they are trying to grab selfies with him.

John Wheeler aka Barley Scotch is a fantastic lead singer and front man for the band, telling stories and asking us to “testify”.  Oh and that’s in between drinking from the shopping trolley of booze that is in the spot most bands use for a drummer.  He talks us through how the four of them can build up the beat and the base with their guitars and banjos so they do not need a drummer, and its true enough, no one is missing one.  The crowd claps, sings, dances and woops their way through the set, huge grins on their faces.

An experience hard to fully describe, but not to be missed!  Haste ye back Hayseed Dixie!
