This week, the Webb observatory arrived at its final destination, about 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth. A final postlaunch course correction to Webb’s trajectory safely sent our new observatory to orbit around Lagrange point 2, or L2. This position is a balancing point between the gravitational pull of Earth and the Sun—an ideal location for infrared observation of the cosmos.

Now that Webb’s primary mirror segments and secondary mirrors have been deployed, mission engineers will begin the complex process of aligning the telescope’s optics, calibrating its instruments, and continuing to cool the telescope down to prepare to begin science. The telescope’s commissioning process will be complete approximately six months after launch, at which time Webb will start its science mission and help us to uncover more of the mysteries of our universe.
