Welcome to the latest ’5D Pop Culture Website Pick Of The Week Award’, the opportunity to share something in the world of Pop Culture (usually, but not exclusively RPG-related). This week’s choice falls well and truly within of the RPG universe and will shortly be on my own ’to buy’ list on the DriveThrRPG link below.

*

And while the ’5D Pop Culture Website Pick Of The Week Award’ may not be; a) The most prestigious award in the TTRPG community, or b) A snappy, concise award title – well, it will be something we take rather seriously at 5DHQ as we fastidiously wade through the plethora of weekly releases.

And while there may be no review, or even more importantly, no prize, there is the knowledge that the winner has our undying love and adoration…..though not in a creepy way, obviously.

What is Kavlov’s Sanctuary?

Now in print!

Kavlov’s Sanctuary is a campaign module and adventure sandbox created for Mörk Borg, with over 70 pages and 20,000 words. The module is designed with extended play in mind, prioritizing a detailed and immersive setting filled with lore, NPCs, and hooks over a predetermined adventure or rigid plot. It serves as a foundation for game masters to create their own adventures, providing ample opportunity for customization and player-driven exploration.

*

Graphically, the module doesn’t make use of the doom metal ultra violent graphics Mörk Borg fans are used to, opting for a layout and art inspired by classic OSR modules like TSR’s B2 Keep on the Borderland and modern masterpieces like Castle Xyntillan by First Hungarian d20 Society.

About Mörk Borg

Released in 2020, Mörk Borg gained widespread attention and popularity within the TTRPG community for its unique blend of minimalist aesthetics, macabre themes, and innovative gameplay mechanics.

*

The game takes place in a doomed world on the brink of its final collapse, known as Mörk Borg. The setting is characterized by a sense of impending doom, where chaos, death, and existential dread permeate every aspect of existence. The atmosphere is grim and oppressive, with a surrealist and post-apocalyptic vibe that sets it apart from traditional fantasy settings.

*

Mörk Borg’s visual style is striking, featuring black and white illustrations with a strong emphasis on intricate linework, jagged edges, and occult symbolism. The artwork perfectly captures the dark and unsettling tone of the game, evoking a sense of unease and foreboding throughout.

*

The rules of Mörk Borg are deliberately streamlined and minimalistic, focusing on simplicity and improvisation. The system utilizes a unique d20-based dice pool mechanic, where players assemble dice pools based on their character’s abilities and attempt to roll under a target number for success. This streamlined approach encourages quick and intuitive gameplay, allowing for fast-paced sessions and easy entry for both new and experienced players.

*

In Mörk Borg, players take on the roles of outcasts, misfits, and doomed adventurers struggling to survive in the crumbling world. The game heavily emphasizes exploration, improvisation, and player agency, providing a sandbox-like experience where the choices and actions of the players have far-reaching consequences. The setting is filled with strange locations, bizarre creatures, and enigmatic NPCs, presenting a wealth of opportunities for unique and memorable encounters.
