A review from 5D Music & Theatre writer Maria Robertson

This is the “The Show Must Go On – 50th Anniversary Tour”, and what a celebration of those years it is!  I must admit I’m used to doors opening at 7.30 and a support coming on a while later, so we sauntered into the Music Hall and went to have a look at the intriguing merchandise (tea towel anyone?!).  The man behind the table told us the show was about to start so we made our way quickly to our seats and sure enough Leo Sayer bounced onto the stage at 7.30.  He sang his heart out for an hour then we had a twenty minute break and then another whole hour of Leo goodness.  Not a bad performance for a 74 year old with 3 stents and half a knee replacement!

Leo Sayer is not just a talented singer, he is an all-round entertainer: funny, engaging and just utterly lovable.  His set included all the marvellous songs I grew up with: Moonlighting, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Thunder in my Heart, Giving it all Away.  He told us the story of working with Roger Daltrey of The Who and getting offered a job as a singer.  He also told us that he wanted to do something useful in lockdown so spent the time working on a project he had never managed to complete before – covering some songs by The Beatles, which make up his latest album: “Northern Songs”.  He sang us two of the well known Beatles songs which he has “Leo-fied” and they are enjoyable versions, but then I am biased as John Lennon’s Eleanor Rigby is one of my favourites!

When he sang You Make Me Feel Like Dancing a few keen ladies got up and soon there were several people on their feet, some went to the front of the stage and he shook their hands whilst singing away.  Many of the audience had bought their tickets for this show before the pandemic, unfortunately Leo had to stop his tour in Ireland and rush home to Australia when lockdown was announced.  The lady who took one of the older albums and a sharpie up to the front of the stage certainly seemed pleased to get her copy signed by the great man himself.  Looking around the room at the entranced, happy faces everyone was thrilled they had still got the chance to see this legend performing live.
