I will admit now I had not heard of this band from Yorkshire, I’d seen the listing on Aberdeen Performing Arts programme but ignored it as I had not come across them before.  However then a man called Mark on Twitter mentioned going and told me they were awesome so I had a listen on Spotify and sure enough they sounded great.  Long story short he helped me get a ticket to this sold out concert – and I will be forever grateful for the introduction to the Skylights family.

Local band Hitlist were the support, some young lads in Aberdeen Football Club sports gear.  Soul Survivor is their upcoming single but they also played Don’t Let Me Go, Radio Player and Envious Eyes.  Definitely worth checking out if you have not heard of them before: good stage presence, great songs and plenty of energy.

With the audience nicely warmed up (or beered up in some cases) Skylights took to the stage, and the place went mental!  What an atmosphere, throughout the whole set!  There were Leeds flags and AFC flags and chanting and cheering and hands in the air.  At some points you had to question if we’d actually transported to Pittodrie stadium and there was definitely that special kind of testosterone level that you get at a football match, but it made for a very lively gig.  The fact that their song Outlaw includes the AFC slogan of “Stand Free” may have something to do with it, and we were treated to it twice accordingly.

The band are fabulous, with a good mixture of talent and love for what they are doing.  Turn, the guitarist was egging on the audience and singing away without a microphone whilst Rob the lead singer has that vaguely aloof air about him, he stands back when not singing or shaking his tambourine, occasionally claps the audience or puts his hand on his heart.

These guys have such a connection with their fan base, especially obvious on Twitter.  Quite a number had come up from Leeds for this gig, many attending their King Tuts appearance the night before on the way.

*

Darkness Falls is their best known song I believe and it is just such an amazing song, I love it.  Definitely a band to follow, they are on all the usual social media and music streaming services.

*

Their second album Rebellion is due out next month, after that performance I’ll be waiting eagerly.
