A LITTLE FUNKY BACKGROUND

Before I go any further I wish to make you aware that this article is brought to you by me, the newly ordained Scottish Funk Ambassador for Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers……… I’ll explain all that in a short while.

A short time ago I was included in a request from the U.S to see if we at 5DHQ were interested in supporting a campaign to produce the world’s first Sci-Fi – Action Adventure, Space Fantasy Motion Picture that’s all about the FUNK! Now, I know what you’re thinking dear reader – you’re thinking that I must be inundated every day of the week with requests for the genre of Sci-Fi – Action Adventure, Space Fantasy Motion Picture that’s all about the FUNK. I know, right?!…..Well strangely enough, this is actually the first time, because for some reason this seems to be a sub-genre of sci-fi that seems to have lacked a little in output over the years.

Well I’m delighted to say that this may all be about to change.

I have no hesitation in saying this, but man, this was simply too good to refuse! I mean, I love sci-fi (I’m not sure if you’d noticed), I love action and fantasy, plus in my eclectic musical tastes I also happen to love many forms of funk! It’s like it was just meant to be. So I immediately messaged the back FunkMaster G (AKA Glenn Towery) to say that I was indeed interested in doing my wee bit from over here in Scotland….. and so began a mutual appreciation society with plans for promotion, interviews and all manner of bone fide funkiness. It also resulted in my aforementioned title of Scottish Funk Ambassador for Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers. It is one that I shall use wisely.

STARFUNK AND THE ASTRAL PIONEERS – A SYNOPSIS
*
Far in the deepest quadrants of outer space, a military coup threatens to take over the United League of Galaxies on the planet Ameris. The United League of Galaxies boasts the greatest military armada in the universe. A successful coup would assure the destruction of thousands of inhabited worlds filled with life throughout the known universe. The Keeper of the Source, the most spiritual being known to be alive, mysteriously summons beings from a small, little known planet named Funkaura, located in the far off galaxy of Hadu to help in this time of great trouble.
The Funkaurians are an enigma because no one in the United League of Galaxies has ever seen one. This is the first time they have ever attended a meeting on Ameris. The Funkaurians arrive on Ameris just in time to attend the United League’s emergency meeting and witness the attempted takeover by its generals. They arrive in their musically powered space vessel, Reflection. Reflection is powered by Funk music and is thought to be the fastest ship in the universe. The Funkaurians, with their musical instrument weapons in hand, have come to oppose these military leaders who would take over and rule the universe with the iron fist of retaliation and destruction.
The adventure begins as the Funkaurians, known as “Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers” fight against seemingly impossible odds using Funk power to defeat cruel and evil tyrants, hell-bent on total destruction of the universe.

I wrote Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers about 15 years ago and everyone who has read the screenplay falls in love with it. It is chock full of originality and is a great space fantasy adventure with memorable characters, plot twists, story and funky music.
I have had problems trying to get the money to make this movie because it is considered a high budget film. I think the problems stem from the fact that I am an Independent filmmaker of color. However, many filmmakers would find it difficult to make a film such as this.Now I know many studios would take a high concept screenplay like this and want to spend a hundred million dollars to make this movie. I feel that I can make a great film of this project for a little more than 10 percent of that and give some overly qualified people in the industry who have not yet had their numbers called get an of a lifetime opportunity. The creation of Starfunk and the Astral Pioneers would be historic because no one has ever done a full length motion picture that speaks to funk music and incorporates the Funk mythology such as the Mothership Connection.
I am a man who has had a dream to make this movie for many years. I got my Bachelors of Arts Degree in film in 1997 from Columbia College Hollywood. I became the first Black person in the more then 60 year history of that school to graduate as valedictorian not because I was smarter than my classmates, I think that I just loved filmmaking more than any of them did. I have worked primarily as an Independent filmmaker since that time.I feel however that this is my moment this year 2021 to do this movie and with a push from the right people I can raise enough of the funds to get it done.

THE KICKSTARTER OF FUNK

So the Kickstarter campaign begins on May 15th. As yet we don’t have any specific crowdfunding details about the offers and goodies available, but as soon as we do they’ll be passed on to you. In the meantime let me leave you with this final message from FunkMaster G himself;
